Solid Exercise

How about a little exercise? Sounds good to me.

-Alright! Nothing like a bunch of Clouds and Difference Clouds to act a base.

This is a new doc in Greyscale. The dimensions are 250 x 250. The dimensions aren't entirely important, but I want to mention it now so I can mention something else later.

-Here is the above with Filter > Pixelate > Mosaic. I used a setting of 50, so the big squares are 5 x 5. Make sense?

-Here we have almost the same thing. The difference is that I used Filter > Pixelate > Crystalize (also with a setting of 50).

Pretty cheap and boring. Let's take it for a test drive anyways. I got an idea: let's use Biker Chic! With the above saved as PSD, they are good to go as a D-Map. Here is what they do:

Oops! I almost forgot to mention something. Biker Chic is 200px square. The D-Maps are 250px square. Yet, if you look close enough at the Mosaic variation, you'll notice the big 5x5 squares. Why? Stretch to Fit! Had Tile been used, then Biker Chic would have a big 4x4 thing going. Shouldn't be too hard to figure it out if you think about it for a bit.

Are you starting to see possibilities? I hope so. As a matter of fact, the Crystalize variation is a decent base for doing broken glass type stuff.

If you would like another exercise in solids, read Broken China.

I would like to assign some homework, but I'm sure you know what to do -
